‘Saddle Back Mare with Soliders’ stages a scene at once in motion and immobile; the horse, one of the various children’s toys used, is poised in a regal posture upon the wallpaper base. The ribbons that cascade from the bridle and tail, pin the horse to the board in a scene where the decorative ornamentation has perhaps become an anchor. With the presence of the bow adorning its tail, a signal among equestrian circles of an animal that kicks or is dangerous, and the horse encircled by the plastic soldiers, Cherry’s work holds up a kaleidoscope of mirrors to the viewer and in so, a plethora of potential interpretations of this dark humoured piece., with political overtones.
